Hazelton Trial

Monday, March 12, 2007

Scranton, PA

Monday, March 12 is the first day of the Hazleton trial.  The City of Hazelton is going to Federal District Court for its anti-immigrant ordinance which targets landlords and employers.  This is the first trial in the country on a local anti-immigrant ordinance.  Dozens of local ordinances have been passed in the country (many of them in Pennsylvania), and still more have been placed on hold, pending the outcome of this trial.  What happens in Scranton could determine the fate of anti-immigrant ordinances in communities across the nation.  The United States Chamber of Commerce filed an amicus brief in support of the lawsuit on Monday, March 5.  Read the filed brief, which details the various reasons for the Chamber’s action.
