Project SHINE is a multicultural,
intergenerational service‑learning initiative that is
part of a
national consortium.
SHINE mobilizes a diverse group of college students to
provide language, literacy and citizenship tutoring to
elderly immigrants and refugees in 14 cities across the
country. Students are matched with small groups of
adult learners, or assist in ESL classes as “coaches”
alongside ESL
instructors at various community and senior centers
around the area. The main office of SHINE Philadelphia
is located at Temple University, in the
Center for Intergenerational Learning.
Students tutor at social services agencies, senior
centers, cultural associations, Buddhist temples and
churches across the city. The learners come from a wide
variety of backgrounds and cultures. |
